Mental Illness Advocacy Center: Legal Representation Services

Who we are:

MIAC lawyers are licensed in New York, Colorado, and North Carolina to-date. We can provide legal services in all 50 states through various mechanisms.

Most local attorneys, whether criminal or civil, are not well-versed in mental health law or advocacy.

Services offered:

Due to our nonprofit nature, we offer legal services on a sliding scale to accommodate your financial needs. We represent individuals and families in mental health legal matters, including, but not limited to:

• • Proceedings for retention and treatment over objection

• • Adult guardianship proceedings

• • Applications for court-ordered Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT)

• • Execution of advanced directives

• • Employment law matters, including wrongful termination and discrimination

• • Criminal defense matters

Our unique area of expertise allows us to serve as co-counsel with attorneys of all other areas of practice involving mental health issues. Due to our experience and background, we know how to offer a caring hand to families and their loved ones with serious mental illness. We are creative thinkers and work hard to develop innovation and “outside the box” solutions. We do not take policy positions on legal representation and can offer the full gamut of services.
